One of the amazing parts about Rome, as you can imagine, is the history. IT is amazing to be in a place that is so old. in the US! We are amazed when something was build in the 1700s. but the Colloseum and the Roman form were build in the height of the Caesar period which was from 300 BC to 100 AD. That is so incredible to an American from such a young country.
ONce again, Rome surprised me. I didn't expect to be so overwhelmed by these ancient places. when we saw the Roman Forum, I wasn't really sure what it was, but these columns and pillars were pretty incredible. Then, we saw the Colloseum. I have seen hundreds of pictures of it. Yet, seeing it in person gave me shivers. It was a brutal place, and I wouldn't have wanted to live during that time, but it is awe- inspiring.

Here are some photos of the Roman Forum. this was the hub of Roman life in 100 BC to 300 AD. I knew nothing about it, but we spent a whole afternoon strolling though it and reading about the history. AGain, a shout out to Rick Steves. He has free audio tours of famous places in Europe. We used a lot of them and found they really increased our understanding of what we were seeing.
EVen though Rome is a huge city and the traffic is chaotic, it is also a very walkable city. We walked everywhere. Our feet hurt by the end of the day. One day we did 26,000 steps which is about 11 miles. We had our map, but we would wander in the direction we though was right. Luckily, both of us have a good sense of direction, so we always ended up in the right place eventually.
Another delight in Rome was reconnecting with Nici Ritter, a young Germab woman who stayed with us for a few weeks several years ago. She studied Italian for 5 years in middle and high school. She was in Rome studying in an Italian University for a semester. I was so impressed because she was studying marketing with Italians in Italian!
